Rohit Ross Lakhanpal, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Lakhanpal was raised in Columbia, MD where he excelled in sports as well as academics, graduating Magna Cum Laude from McDonogh School and becoming a varsity letterman in wrestling, lacrosse and soccer. After graduating with honors from Franklin & Marshall College, he received his medical degree from the University of Maryland.

His ophthalmology residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center was distinguished by his appointment as Chief Resident. Dr. Lakhanpal then undertook a two-year research and medical retina fellowship at the Doheny Retina Institute under the guidance of Mark S. Humayun, MD, PhD and Eugene de Juan, MD. There, he wrote several peer-reviewed articles on the Intraocular Retinal Prosthesis and artificial vision, small-incision vitreoretinal surgery, and surgical treatments of retinovascular disease. He was honored with the prestigious Fletcher Jones Foundation Grant for his work and was one of the founders and the Principal Investigator of the Doheny Digital Reading Center’s Diabetic Screening Studies.

Following his tenure at Doheny, Dr. Lakhanpal completed a two-year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He served as the Chief of the Retina Service for the Ben Taub General Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Hospital, and Texas Children’s Hospital, performing over 700 surgical procedures in the operating room and over 300 intravitreal injections. At the end of his vitreoretinal fellowship, Dr. Lakhanpal was honored with the Outstanding Fellow Award among his peers. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and has presented papers as first author at ARVO and ASRS each of the last 4 years.

Dr. Lakhanpal is a co-founder and current Vice-President of the Vit-Buckle Society (VBS), a national vitreoretinal society focused on surgical innovation and technique while also fostering an atmosphere of discussion and camaraderie.

More recently, Dr. Lakhanpal has also been appointed Co-Section Editor of Retina Today, a monthly peer-reviewed periodical highlighting innovations in medical and surgical techniques. He also has been appointed Co-Section Editor of, a global resource for ophthalmologists to view and discuss surgical challenges and techniques.

Based on Dr. Lakhanpal’s work with 25 gauge vitrectomy 15 years ago, he continues to be one of the leaders in this field of microincisional vitrectomy surgery (MIVS) with 27 gauge vitrectomy, the newest advancement in vitreoretinal surgery technique. For more information, click on the link below.

Ross Lakhanpal, M.D., F.A.C.S. had the distinct honor and privilege to have worked every day with Dr. Humayun from 2001-2004 as his Fellow at Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California. They published many manuscripts together during that time and also co-authored the first book chapter on "Artificial Vision" ten years ago. Dr. Humayun is an amazing innovator and an even better person. He provided Dr. Lakhanpal with knowledge and leadership qualities that he uses today.

Recently, Dr. Lakhanpal was honored by his peers and elected to the prestigious Retina Society.
